The Legend behind the Ione Cash Register

The National Cash Register was built in 1899 and sold to the George Woolsey family store that same year. The store, located in Buena Vista, sold groceries, hardware, and clothing. The cash register was shipped by train from Jasper, New York. When on September 9, 1899 the train was held up in Cochise, Arizona by Alvord-Stiles gang who were lawmen turned outlaws. The register was taken by Billy Stiles which started an argument with Burton Alvord over the register — “Just take the money and leave the damn register!” The story was that the cash register was left after Billy tried to lift it onto his horse, which caused Burton to laugh at Billy over the scene of lifting the heavy cash register onto his horse. They both rode off leaving the register on the dusty ground of the Arizona Territory.

The train employees picked up the register and loaded it back onto the train and proceeded to San Francisco. There, the register was loaded onto a supply wagon filled with dry goods and mining equipment on the way through the Sierra Miwok territory. The wagon was stopped by the local tribe and a trade was made to pass through their territory. One of the braves fell in love with the shiny machine and a fierce trade negotiation proceeded. Tensions grew as the negotiations continued with weapons all drawn when the driver informed that the register was the property of the Woolsey store. The Miwok's, knowing the Woolsey which they had traded with, settled for two shovels.

The supply wagon continued to the town of Bedbug (Ione today) when just outside of town the outlaw DJ Strong held up the wagon killing the driver and guard and taking the wagon. DJ rode off to meet up with his girl Rose, a prostitute known as The Black Rose. There at the Ione Valley Hotel (Ione Hotel), she was with another man and DJ killed her and DJ was shot by the other man. The owner of the hotel, Thomas Rickey, unloaded the wagon and sold the other items while keeping the cash register. Ghosts still try to take the register to this day.
